Maintaining Traditions Of Excellence With NDSU’s Matt Larsen

Guest Matt Larsen, North Dakota State
24:02 watch

“Understanding the tradition and history at North Dakota State and making sure we value that but also how do we grow and evolve and build upon an unbelievable foundation but also maintaining a culture that’s really strong… at our place, it’s bigger than a coach, it’s bigger than a star player – it really goes to our community and the level of support and really high expectations they have. The expectations are through the roof.” That’s North Dakota State Director of Athletics Matt Larsen in conversation with ADU’s Tai M. Brown at the 2025 NCAA Convention. Larsen and Brown dive into the Bison’s ability to maintain a tradition of excellence across a broad portfolio of sports.

Larsen offers insight into the department’s ability to continuously cultivate alumni, community and corporate supporters, noting that without the presence of professional sports or teams in the state, NDSU serves as a lifeblood for the region. Larsen: “So much of our success is driven by our fanbase, our community, the state, the region… we’ve done it on the backs of our external folks.”

  • - 14 years in the chair?
  • - When you talk about culture and you can change elements like ADs, presidents, coaches and still find ways to win - there's something deeper happening there. I'm sure it was more than a call from a search firm that attracted you to this position.
  • - It's not just football - you have national championships in other sports.
  • - Are most student-athletes from that region of the country?
  • - How do you sell student-athletes who aren't from that region on the weather? If you're winning, the adjustment must be easier...
  • - I was under the assumption that there was state money coming in to support NDSU Athletics.
  • - How do you evolve the story to donors when you're continuously winning?
  • - How involved are former athletes?
  • - What's the apparatus - some kind of Letterwinner's Association or affinity organization?
  • - Those are entities on their own or under the umbrella of the university?
  • - Does the entity give money or is it stewardship, so individuals give money?
  • - And then the football players' association.
  • - The executive director of that organization must be pretty astute in terms of relationships.
  • - How do you navigate the overlap between your donors and the university's donor base?
  • - How has NIL and revenue share impacted all of these things we've discussed so far?
  • - How are you supporting student-athletes as they seek to discover their identity outside their sport?
  • - How do you look at your collection of national championship rings and decide which one to wear?
