Aligning With The Mission With Army West Point’s Tom Theodorakis

Guest Tom Theodorakis, Army West Point
15:08 watch

“You’re constantly in a position of uncertainty or it could be maybe uncomfortable… you really have to be pretty grounded in who you are and your values and understand this is our mission.” That’s Army West Point Director of Athletics Tom Theodorakis in conversation with ADU’s Tai M. Brown at the 2025 NACDA Convention.

Theodorakis, just months into his role as AD, reflects on the unique ways the Black Knights align athletic excellence with the overarching mission of the Academy. Theodorakis explains how his initial 90-day plan was impacted by the need to hire three head coaches in his first few months in the Big Chair but how those searches provided his team the opportunity to redefine their values.

As he evaluates the landscape ahead, Theodorakis notes that the challenges facing intercollegiate athletics can either create an identity crisis for athletic departments or allow leaders the chance to identify and pursue opportunities that best align with their institutional mission.

  • - You like to lean into uncomfortable situations; tell me about the first uncomfortable situation you've encountered from the Big Chair.
  • - Give me an example.
  • - I've talked to other ADs about hiring coaches and that is not what you want to do when you first get into the chair.
  • - How is the hiring process different at Army than at other institutions?
  • - Is there anything that opened your eyes to the reality of being an AD?
  • - When an alumnus passes away, they mail their class rings back to be melted and made into new rings for future cadets. Tell me about that tradition.
  • - Are there masses of boxes of rings that people send in?
  • - Tell me about the mind shift of being an externally-focused administrator and needing to have an internal focus as an AD. What was that process like for you?
  • - When you sit down with your staff to learn more about the organization from their role and perspective, they probably think that as their leader, you're evaluating them. How do you balance that?
  • - How are you engaging with the student-athletes as the AD?
  • - You're a national champion in lacrosse, so you understand the bond that comes from working together for a common purpose and goal.
  • - What is the next big uncomfortable thing for you to lean into at Army West Point?
